| People in the U.S. breathe cleaner air than the usual year ago, but there's still plenty of room for improvement.So says the American Lung Association's (ALA) "State of the Air 2006." The annual report is targeted on particle pollution (soot) in the air, as well as ozone levels (smog).Last year's winners and losers for year-round soot pollution didn't change. Cheyenne, Wyo. continues to have the least year-round soot pollution, while the Los Angeles area has got the most year-round soot pollution, according to the ALA.Sooty air showed a "general decline" considering that the ALA's 2005 report, largely on account of pollution-cutting programs at coal-fired power plants. But soot and smog remain "persistent threats against large parts of the United States," in accordance with the ALA. Filthy air is unhealthy for anyone, but it might be particularly hazardous for older persons, children, and people with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease, or diabetes, notes the ALA.Over fifty percent of the U.S. population lives in counties that have unhealthful amounts of smog or soot, the report also states. The man who killed four people at the church and missionary training center in Colorado died of a self-inflicted shotgun wound, police said Tuesday.Matthew Murray, 24, was struck many times by a security officer at New Life Church Sunday but died after firing one particular shot at himself, the El Paso County Coroner's Office concluded after an autopsy.CBS News affiliate KKTV reports that Murray was hit Three to four times in his legs and his wrist. One shot may have even hit the gun he was holding, that she then used to take his life.The coroner's report also officially ruled the deaths of Stephanie and Rachael Works homicides, stating that each of the young women died by a single shot on the torso.Volunteer guard Jeanne Assam shot Murray after he entered the church. Investigators had earlier suggested his death has been a suicide, but credited Assam's bravery with averting an increased tragedy.Assam, a 42-year-old former Minneapolis police officer, said her faith allowed her to remain steady under pressure."It appeared like it was me, the gunman and God," she said, her hands trembling as she recounted the shooting throughout a news conference.The initial attack Sunday occurred at Youth Using a Mission, a training center for missionaries from the Denver suburb of Arvada; another occurred about 12 hours later with the New Life Church in Colorado Springs.Officials said revenge was one apparent motive to the attacks. Police said Murray had sent hate mail on the Youth With a Mission center over the last few weeks after being taken off the program years ago.In the statement, the training center said medical problems kept Murray from finishing this program, but elaborated little. Murray didn't complete the lecture phase or perhaps a field assignment in a 12-week program, Youth Which has a Mission said.Authorities also believe he authored an anti-Christian diatribe online that closely repeated a rant by one of several Columbine killers, a newspaper reported Tuesday.The latest post to the site, a forum if you have left evangelical religious groups, was Sunday morning within the hours between his attacks in Arvada and Colorado Springs, in accordance with KUSA-TV in Denver, which first reported on the writings."You Christians brought this on yourselves," Murray wrote, according to the station, which would not identify the site. He was vacationing along with his family on Martha's Vineyard when he and his father, Minnesota cardiologist Dr. Barry Maron, saw a lifeguard giving an answer to a collapse that engulfed an 8-year-old girl.The lady survived, thanks to a spectacular rescue. But it resulted in a big impression on Maron, who's spent years tracking — and talking about — similar incidents."It's been much like a vendetta for him," said Dennis Arnold, who runs the shore patrol in the Martha's Vineyard community of Edgartown and was Maron's boss that summer.People naturally bother about splashier threats, like shark attacks. However, the Marons' research found there was 16 sand hole or tunnel deaths inside the U.S. from 1990-2006 compared with 12 fatal shark attacks for the similar period, according to University of Florida statistics.And Bradley Maron thinks the sand-related deaths are less well-documented than shark attacks.The father and son based their report largely on press accounts and Internet searches. The majority of the incidents were in the last 10 years, when Internet reports were available.Overall, they counted 31 recreational sand hole deaths since 1985 in the usa, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.
