Facing a diagnosis of cancers of the breast is challenging enough, but facing breast cancer during pregnancy can be literally devastating. Can I have chemotherapy? Will the therapy hurt my baby ? New information helps to answer these questions, as well as the findings should actually reassure patients in addition to their doctors. "That is on par with the national average," she says. Chemotherapy-treated patients usually obtain a combination of three drugs -- fluorouracil, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide. The American Cancer Society estimates that about one in 3,000 pregnant women are diagnosed with breast cancers, and the number is anticipated to grow as more for women who live babies in their late 30s and 40s, says Litton. More than a decade ago the American Cancer Society set a target of cutting cancer rate by 25% by the year 2015. "The not so great part of the story is the American Cancer Society had this objective of 25% decline over 25 years or so, and it looks like we are going to be shy of this because it's not declining fast enough." Can that goal be reached whenever we continue at this rate? Emanuel: "No. As we continue at this rate we certainly won't reach it. Even if we speed up somewhat, we're unlikely to arrive at it. So we are really not going to make that goal. Though the American Cancer Society set a fairly aggressive goal - 1 / 4 decline in all of cancers." The greatest declines that were found were among men and folks over the age of 65. Exactly why do you think that is? Emanuel: "Most with this is the decline in smoking. Between 1965, roughly, and from now on, we've had a greater than 50% decline in smoking. The united states really has changed its attitude toward smoking, now only 1 in 5 Americans smoke. Which includes had a big influence on lung cancer, cancer in the mouth and pharynx, along with other cancers. So that's the big, big factor here.
