Police conducting a routine security sweep of Mayor John F. Street's City Hall office found a concealed listening device Tuesday morning, authorities said.Street, who's seeking re-election, quickly sought to reassure city residents that his office had not been the subject of an investigation."I have done no problem," Street said with a news conference.FBI spokesman Linda Vizi said the device was not connected to any campaign espionage, but she refused to state whether Street was being investigated or if the FBI planted the unit.Police said officers inspect the mayor's office every three or four months.Tuesday's discovery comes close to the end of a heated mayoral campaign that pits Street against Republican challenger Sam Katz for the second time. Street beat Katz four years ago by less than 10,000 votes within the city of 1.5 million, and polls show a neck-and-neck race again in 2010.The Katz camp had absolutely nothing to do with the device, campaign spokeswoman Maureen Garrity said.In August, someone tossed what might have been an unlit firebomb through the window of a Katz campaign office, and Katz has accused a Street supporter of brandishing a gun and telling Katz and his awesome wife, "You're going down."Supporters of Street, that's black, have accused Katz, that's white, of race baiting.Street said he was confident the device was not placed by law enforcement."The question that ultimately is certain to get raised in the minds of some individuals is who's investigating the mayor's office?" This is his story: The sport began in the summer of '98 at CBS News headquarters in New York. In one hand, I had my old darts from college. Inside the other, a really fine map of America I had commandeered from the eighth-floor hallway. I recall feeling bad at the thought of placing hole in it. But I certainly didn't start to see the need to buy a map, either. All things considered, this was just a one-time experiment. Why waste hundreds of bucks on a new map when all you need to do is put one, tiny hole within it? Needless to say, I have since trashed that map and a half dozen others. I now have them wholesale.The dart idea actually stumbled on me while I was doing a story on a guy named David Johnson. Johnson is a newspaper reporter in Lewiston, Idaho. For nearly 20 years, he's been writing stories about people he randomly selects from his local phone book. He even created rules for his column. Most importantly, he was not allowed to ignore a willing subject. Although not allow himself to make a decision who's worthy of a story and who's not. Mainly because he felt they were all worthy.I used to be hooked. The lottery part of it really intrigued me and i also was especially excited about adding the map element. I figured it would be such a thrill to search at the whim of a dart. Therefore i tossed the arrow over my shoulder thus hitting - Glasscock County, Texas. Desert. 113 degrees. In fact, it might take almost a year for me to truly believe what David Johnson knew all along – that this phone book is loaded with wonderful stories. Between then and now, I have interviewed 99 Americans picked aimlessly. We have been to 40 different states (Texas 7 times, Hawaii none. Go figure.). A woman who was gang-raped in Pakistan in the retaliatory "honor" attack said Saturday she's fearful after several of the alleged perpetrators were ordered released from prison.Mukhtar Mai in June 2002 was raped by four men about the orders of a village council that wanted to punish her family.The assault was ordered after Mai's brother was accused of having sex with a woman from the more prominent family, though Mai's family says the allegations were fabricated to hide a sex assault from the boy by several men.Mai's story captured global attention and prompted President Gen. Pervez Musharraf to acquire the arrest of the culprits. Within days six men were in jail, and a judge sentenced them to death after finding them guilty.On Thursday, however, an appeals court in Multan in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province ordered five from the men released because of a insufficient evidence. The other had his death sentence reduced alive in prison.While the five have yet to be released, Mai said she will not safe in her village of Meerwala — 350 miles southwest with the capital, Islamabad — where the crime occurred."I fear that those who were awarded death sentences usually takes any step after their release," a tearful Mai told The Associated Press, urging the federal government to provide her protection.Mai, a 33-year-old teacher, said she had not leave her village and promised to appeal the court's decision."I will fight a legal battle to death. I want all of the people who molested me hanged," she said.Mai told a news conference in Islamabad she had asked her lawyer to challenge a legal court verdict. "My case is not only in Pakistan court, and also in the court of God," she said."I hope the Supreme Court of Pakistan will give me justice," Mai said.Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said the federal government would file an appeal in the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Mai's behalf.Mai originates from the Gujar clan. The attackers were from a clan considered socially higher, called Mastoi.She denied her 13-year-old brother Abdul Shakoor had relations using the Mastoi woman, saying the clan fabricated the tale to cover up another incident, by which her brother was allegedly sexually assaulted by Mastoi men.Mai said she cannot forget what went down on June 22, 2002, when they came to her house and accused Shakoor. Hours later, a village council summoned her father."I was concerned with my brother, so I went there to see the proceedings," she said. "My father was defending Shakoor whenever a man caught me and started taking me to a house. I cried and requested help. Some armed men caught dad. Later, four men took turns raping me then threw me out of that house."She said she will never forgive the people who saw her being dragged away but did nothing to help.
