| Not one of Arthur and Marie Noe's ten children lived to see a second birthday, reports CBS News Correspondent Elizabeth Kaledin . Back then it could only be explained with a new phenomenon: sudden infant death syndrome. But today, 50 years after the death from the first baby, prosecutors say they do know better. "We...allege that Mrs. Noe murdered her children by use of a pillow or some other soft item," said prosecutor Lynne Abraham.Approaching 70-years-old, Marie Noe appeared problem Thursday on closed circuit television. Her Husband will not be charged. All along she's maintained that the children died in their sleep. In one interview, Mrs. Noe is quoted as saying "just one of these stupid things. We just weren't meant to have children, I guess."Suspicions grew together child after another died, but police never pursued criminal charges. The question today is how this could have happened.Author Jamie Talan, who researched this situation for the book The Death of Innocents attributes it with a sort of denial that was included with the times."It was 50's and 60's," said Talan. "We could not believe a mother could do that to her children."Prosecutors say they are able to make a case and that they also have a confession. However, Marie Noe's attorney says the confession was coerced, because his client is in poor health."She was told if she signed your firm stand out they would release her," said defense attorney David Rudenstein.However, that's not the case today. Marie Noe was denied bail and may now wait in prison to answer charges that what happened to her children had not been mystery - but murder. Until now, surgeons have used a procedure called ductal lavage, where cells are taken out of inside the milk ducts after which tested in the lab. With ductoscopy, the surgeon can see right inside the patient's milk ducts. Using a tiny camera and video monitor within an examining room, while the patient watches, your physician can see if any abnormalities exist and please take a sample. Boolbol and her colleagues believe the task may lead to the diagnosis of breast cancer prior to ever before. "We think that ductoscopy at this point is the tip of the iceberg," she says. "The horizon is merely enormous for the uses of this <procedure>." For Toney, there are no signs of cancer. "I had a doctor tell me that worry and being really stressed out was one of the worst things when you have cancer, so no I don't worry about it, what can I actually do?" Toney says. Ductoscopy can be done in about 40 minutes in the doctor's office. Patients are given an anesthetic and a lot experience little to no pain. Marshall explains there are many advantages to ductoscopy. The first is that it permits the surgeon to remove any lesions without making a large incision, which means there is certainly less of a chance of damaging surrounding tissue. And because it's not an invasive procedure, ductoscopy is possible as frequently as necessary. Another advantage to ductoscopy is it is more likely to get an accurate result when a biopsy is done. Currently, not every hospital or doctor offers this action, but it is growing in popularity. Ductoscopy can be more widely available in the coming months. Dr. Marshall says if you think you're a candidate for a ductoscopy, ask your physician about the procedure. If he or she doesn't provide procedure, they can recommend someone in the area who does.
