"There are a growing quantity of studies that show that eating moderate amounts of chocolate may provide some health advantages," says Senay. "The latest study, from Germany in this morning's Journal of the American Medical Association, looked over 13 adults with mild high blood pressure levels, an average of 153 over 84. Normal blood pressure is below 120 over 80. The participants ate three ounces of chocolate every day for two weeks. Half of the patients got candy, half got dark chocolate."Blood pressure remained virtually unchanged in the group that ate white chocolate. After two weeks, systolic blood pressure (the most notable number) had dropped around five points in the dark chocolate group. The lower number (diastolic pressure) fell about almost two points. "While their blood pressure level did not fall enough that need considering in the desirable range, they were moving in the right direction."Does this suggest we can feel a little better about eating chocolate?"It's beginning yet, but the news seems very good if you like to nibble," says Senay. "This small study will have to be confirmed in larger, longer-term ones before doctors could recommend treatment with chocolate for high blood pressure. But the signs are encouraging that moderate numbers of dark chocolate may not be as bad even as we thought, and may have some benefits for cardiovascular health."What's in chocolate that's healthy for you?Senay explains that dark chocolate contains plant substances called polyphenols, ingredients that have antioxidant effects which might be good for the heart. Similar substances are in fruits and vegetables. Dark chocolate has higher quantities of polyphenols than lighter chocolate.Polyphenols have been shown to lower blood pressure in animals. Some researchers believe polyphenol molecules inhibit a body chemical known to contribute to heart problems by causing blood vessels to narrow. There are a few studies that indicate chocolates is a mild anti-inflammatory. So is chocolate poised to be part of a well-balanced diet?"Well-balanced is the vital thing phrase. Chocolate is still very fattening," cautions Senay. "The participants within the study replaced the sweet stuff they'd normally consume with sweets instead, so they did not enhance their calories and gain weight during the study. But too much chocolate in the diet would no doubt result in weight gain. And if you gain too much weight, the risks from obesity would outweigh the main advantages of the chocolate."
