Katie Clapp's son, Andy, may seem like any other youngster but for anyone familiar with Fragile X, his long face and broad forehead are telltale characteristics from the syndrome. Clapp was not familiar with Fragile X when Andy was given birth to and struggled to find out the thing that was wrong. "I remember during the 1st year going back several times and worrying he wasn't sitting up when he needs to have and that he was a floppy baby. Anf the husband certainly didn't crawl while he should have," Clapp says.It took three long many years of false diagnoses from neurologists, geneticists and pediatricians before an experienced professional in developmental delays uncovered the proper answer. "He saw him walk across the room and flap his hands somewhat," Clapp recalls. On Thursday, the girls took their food through their mouths the first time, which showed they could be released through the hospital, Hartman said.Doctors will see with the family and the girls Tuesday in the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., where the twins were born Feb. 26, about six weeks early.The identical twins had been joined from their chests with their abdomens. They shared a liver, and something baby's heart rested horizontally, protruding in to the other girl's chest cavity. Surgery to part ways them took six hours and left the women with a 14-centimeter scar from chest to abdomen.They were in critical but stable condition on the hospital following surgery and were removed ventilators after three or four days. They recovered in separate ICU units. They will sleep in the same crib in the home.The girls will undergo physical and occupational therapy and may even need some other therapy also, Hartman said, adding that he did not know if other surgeries will be needed.Hartman said there might be some delay in reaching their baby milestones, but as soon as they turn one, they should be on track with normal one-year-olds.Family members also includes an 11-year-old son, Kevin Jr., and a 2-year-old daughter, Taylor."It's so surreal still to support one at a time," said their mother, Melissa Buckles.
