The experiment belongs to a Mayo Clinic study to determine if letting kids move around in college will make them healthier.The theory is that traditional classroom settings with desks and chairs confine children's movement and is also one of the factors explaining why 45 percent of American children are overweight. It's a problem that threatens to produce their generation the first one ever having a shorter life expectancy than their parents."It's so terrifying it is beholden on us as parents to say precisely what are we going to do regarding it," said Dr. James Levine, a scientist on the Mayor Clinic. "Are we really going to sit back and watch this eventually our children? No. I've got children. That's why I'm doing this."Levine designed the chair-free experiment, using the premise that forcing kids to sit down still creates inactive, teens losing weight. By changing the environment, he believes activity increase and weight will drop. "My assumption was when you put children in this environment they will be active — of course they'll be active! — but they won't learn anything because they shall be bouncing off the walls, they shall be laughing, they'll be giggling. But the fact that was immediately clear is that it is the opposite," said Levine. The kids teachers say that, yes, the kids are moving around more — in addition they seem to be learning more. "I've seen kids focus more in math even though they can shift their bodies a bit," said Phil Rynearson, a teacher in the school.Even the children agree they are paying more attention. "We have an overabundance of freedom and so we don't have to always sit because sometimes it gets tiring sitting," said Alicia Karls, a fifth grader.So far the results show a win-win situation. Scientists who have been monitoring student movements are content with the increase in physical activity along with the school is happy with the boost in brain activity. "I think this can be truly exciting because this sends a powerful signal that school systems can adjust to meet the needs of the kids instead of always expecting the kids in order to meet the needs of the system," said Jerry Williams, the Rochester schools superintendent.Case study has been such a success that it's been expanded from a couple weeks until the end of the year and the district wishes to roll out even more of what some are calling "classrooms of the future."As Levine puts it: "If you generate an atmosphere where not only are the children more active, also, they are more healthy, not only are they happy, also, they are losing weight, but they're better educated, who's going to say no?"

The findings were presented in Sarasota, Fla., at the conference of the Association for Chemical Reception Sciences."Given the final results, it is reasonable to expect how the presentation of peppermint or cinnamon odor while driving may produce a more alert and conscientious driver, and reduce the fatigue associated with prolonged driving," says Bryan Raudenbush, PhD, an associate professor of psychology at West Virginia's Wheeling Jesuit University.Automotive Aromatherapy?Raudenbush says past research shows that peppermint and cinnamon odors boost motivation, performance, and alertness while cutting fatigue which stimulates the brain.Recently, he studied those scents in the simulated driving experiment. Participants "drove" under three different conditions: no odor, cinnamon, or peppermint. Cinnamon and peppermint were pumped with an oxygen concentrator for 30 seconds every 15 minutes.The drivers' wakefulness, mood, workload, and mental performance were noted. Road Test ResultsHere's what Raudenbush found:Generally, prolonged driving led to increased anger, fatigue, and physical demand, and also decreased energy. Peppermint decreased anxiety and fatigue while driving. Peppermint and cinnamon both decreased driving frustration while driving. Peppermint and cinnamon both increased alertness while driving."Periodic administration of the odors over long-term driving may prove beneficial in maintaining alertness and decreasing highway accidents and fatalities," write the study. Whether he was recinded to be killed, was already dead when taken away or wounded when taken and died later remains unclear.On Monday, Roberts' comrades at SEALs Special Warfare Group Two in Little Creek, Va., memorialized him, while California Gov. Gray Davis ordered the flag with the state Capitol lowered in his honor, saying, "Neil Roberts made the final sacrifice for our freedoms." SEAL Master Chief Patrick D. She recalled his hunger to sign up the SEALs, the elite fighting force recognized for its rigorous physical and mental conditioning."We were really proud of Neil when he went through with it and made it," said the 35-year-old Lomeli, who last saw Roberts in 1995.Military cameras recorded Roberts' last moments and Lomeli saw news of his death on tv Wednesday while getting her children ready for varsity.Crying, she pulled out her scrapbooks and showed pictures of Roberts holding her son, 12, who had previously been a toddler then in Guam."I told him, 'You were within the arms of a hero,' " she said.
